Bishop Martin Roman Catholic School was established in September of 2001 with an enrolment of 100 students. The school expanded over the years and currently has an enrolment of 496 students and a staff of twenty (20) teachers.

On 4th December 2009, a four-room building that housed the library and three classrooms was destroyed by fire, which displaced ninety (90) students. The students from two classes were temporarily housed in a church building and the other students used a room that was designated as a store room.

In 2010, Bishop Martin R.C. School applied to the Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust for financial support to construct a four-classroom building. At the time, based on the available funds, the project was not approved. On March 24th, 2011, the Principal and the Parents Teachers Association reapplied for funding. This time, the project was approved and funding was granted to construct a three- classroom building using BNECT modular design.

New 3 classroom building

On Thursday 14th June 2012, the Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust along with Bishop Martin R.C. School inaugurated the new three-classroom building. The building was blessed by Fr. Leo Palma. Remarks were given by the Cayo North East Area Representative, Hon. Elvin Penner, and Trustee of the Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust, Mr. Alberto August. Cutting of the ribbon was done by John August, Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena; Daniel Gutierez, Chairman, Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust; Alberto August, Trustee, Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust; the Principal of Bishop Martin RC School, Alejandro Najarro and Education Officer Luis Carballo.
