Student Loan Program
Overview
Since 2009, the BELIZE Natural Energy Charitable Trust has partnered with various credit unions countrywide in its National Student Loan Program. This Student Loan Program is a partnership with local credit unions and started as a pilot initiative in April 2009 when the Trust seeded an initial investment of $1 million dollars. In January 2014, the Board committed an additional $1.5 million dollars to expand the program. To date, this pilot has yielded loan facilities to over 1,211 Belizean students pursuing secondary and tertiary education at local institutions throughout the country.
General Objective
The general objective of the Student Loan Program is to provide access to financing to Belizean students pursuing or interested in pursuing higher education at any Belizean institution.
Criteria
The Individual Must:
- Be a Belizean
- Be Accepted by or enrolled in an education institution in Belize
- Have a letter showing tuition and fees for which financing is sought
- Be a member or agree to become a member of any of the Trust’s partner credit unions
- Have a guarantor or other forms of loan security
- Maintain a G.P.A of 2.5 and above
